finding bigfoot

Cliff Barackman, bigfoot researcher on Animal Planet’s television series, Finding Bigfoot, does a video debrief of the Minnesota episode.

Northern Minnesota is a rural area of forests, farmlands, and bogs. The human population is mostly in small urban areas and farms that are separated by huge tracts of nearly impassable land. Many large animals make this area their home, including deer, moose, wolves, bear, and sasquatches.

It was Andy Pieper’s interesting recordings that brought us to this location. The spot he recorded them has had bigfoot activity on or near it for many years. Most of the sounds he recorded were clearly canines, but one or two were more ambiguous. I think it’s at least possible that those vocalizations were from a bigfoot (though it’s equally possible that they were from a wolf).

One of the highlights of this trip was driving those cool amphibious swamp vehicles manufactured by Argos. They have eight wheels, can float, and can drive over most obstacles. At first I felt a little bad about plowing through thickets of plants and trees, but an interesting feature of these peat bogs is that the trees and plants, once pushed down, pop back up.  Utilizing these amazing vehicles, we were able to access islands of dry land deep in the peat bogs that few people ever go to. The one we spent the most time on was called “The Nursery” by the local bigfooters because of the small human-like footprints found there over the years that they believe are from juvenile sasquatches. These islands certainly would be excellent places for young bigfoots to hunt and hide without having to worry about meddling humans.

The deer kill that Ranae and I found was the work of predators. It could have been from wolves, coyotes, or even a bigfoot, but we couldn’t tell. However, that we found the scattered bones right inside the tree line was interesting. It would be strategic for a predator to ambush any prey animals as they entered the forest after crossing the marsh.

The night investigation yielded mixed results. At one point Ranae and I heard loud plopping noises of something dropping into water. At the time, we were utterly unaware of the pond that was on the other side of the brush.  We thought that there was no body of water other than shallow, marshy pits with reeds and grasses growing in them.  After learning that the pond was there, I changed my hypothesis from rocks being thrown to a beaver slapping its tail on the surface of the water (as they often do when disturbed).  Though it is likely that the noises were made by a beaver, Ranae insisted that she could hear something large walking through the woods between where we were standing and where the noises came from. I did not hear those walking noises, but Ranae was so insistent that I have to at least keep the possibility open that those noises were from something else.

The town hall meeting was amazing. The little building we used was packed with standing room only. We took the time to listen to each and every person who wanted to share their story with us. Even after the meeting, I had people come up to me to tell me about their bigfoot encounter that they didn’t feel comfortable sharing in front of everyone. There are indeed a lot of bigfoot encounters in this area, and there has been for decades.

Bobo’s solo investigation would last three nights. I knew it would be a good one, even if the bigfoots weren’t around at that time of year.  I’ve been bigfooting with Bobo on many nights over the last seven years we’ve been friends, and if there’s something I know about him, it’s that he hates bugs. There have been several hot days in the woods when Bobo would not get out of the tent because of the horse flies. He would instead lie in the tent with the screen door open and lure the horseflies inside. Once the fly was in the tent, he would quickly zip up the door and engage the insect in mortal combat. “Only one of us can come out alive,” he claimed. He dubbed the tent, “The Thunderdome,” and bug gut stains still adorn the inside walls to this day (it was my tent…). He even would go as far as mounting particularly large flies that he found to be worthy opponents on small pieces of wood to decorate his trophy wall at home.

Jenna, the young jogger, saw a large bigfoot just a short distance from her home. Interestingly, there has been other activity around their property. Once, a very large and dark figure was seen walking about 200 yards away inside the wood line on the other side of a field.  An interesting fact that surfaced while spending time with Jenna is that her dog is named “Bobo.”

The sighting at the town hall meeting that was told by Lorraine grabbed my attention. She saw a large bigfoot in broad daylight looking into an abandoned trailer only a mile or so away from where Jenna saw hers while jogging. That trailer was still there, so this was an excellent opportunity to get some decent size estimates on this big guy that was so often seen in the area.
Lorraine is a very sweet woman with a no-nonsense attitude with the charming habit of occasionally talking like a sailor. She told me that her sister didn’t believe that she saw a bigfoot, so Lorraine told her sister that she “hopes it takes a sh** on her porch!”  She said that would convince her.  I adored her.  She was so cute and so much fun to talk to.

On April 9, 2010,  Lorraine was driving down a rural road when she found two cars stopped in the road ahead of her. Thinking that a police officer had pulled someone over, she slowed down. She saw a large dark figure next to an abandoned trailer off to her right only 90 yards away.
Including Lorraine, there were three cars stopped in the road that day with the occupants all looking at the bigfoot.  Lorraine was in the third car back. The first car had two young men wearing baseball caps in it, the second had a couple from the Pacific Northwest, and then Lorraine alone in the third car.

The bigfoot looked into the trailer window for a few moments, using its right hand to shield the glare on the window.  It then started walking down the driveway towards where everyone was stopped on the road. The young men in the first car quickly drove away in fear when they saw the creature coming their direction. The other two cars were treated to a close up view of the sasquatch as it passed only 29 yards from where Lorraine was stopped. It crossed the road (24 feet wide) and went over a 46 inch tall barbed wire fence without breaking stride in only three or four steps. After clearing the fence it disappeared into the thick woods and was not seen again.

Lorraine spoke to the couple in the car in front of her after the event was over. They had a totally unobstructed view of the creature from quite close. They noted that they saw the hair very well, and clearly saw that this creature was a male. The creature did not look at the witnesses as it passed.
Lorraine remembered seeing where its chin was compared to the window, as well as where the crown of its head reached. The top of the creature’s head measured 108 inches off the ground, which is nine feet. The chin was at about the 89 inch level, or seven foot five inches. That makes the head of the creature 19 inches from chin to crown.  (It’s not just their feet that are big.)

At one point in our investigation, a man drove by in a truck and asked what we were doing. We told him about the bigfoot sighting, and he told us that that this particular sasquatch had been seen several times by people that he knows in the area. He even told us a nick name of this particular creature given to it by the locals: “Peek-a-Lou.” It seems that many of the local humans are aware of this creature and its affinity for looking into windows.

The next sighting we were to investigate happened on public (and protected) land adjacent to the witness’ property. Dale and Kristy’s were out ATV riding and bird hunting with their children when they saw a large bigfoot get up and immediately leave the area near the trail.  The ATV’s had come to a stop, and Dale seems  to have stirred up the sasquatch from hiding as he walked through the thick forest in search of game birds.  The creature retreated back up the road, which was away from where Dale had walked.  They heard it crashing through the brush for a distance, before losing track of it.

Our last night investigation actually took place in two separate locations. The mobile call blasting part was overlooking a deep river gorge containing a state park. At one point, I heard a possible call back, but it was too distant to discern if it was a bigfoot or some sort of canine. Down below in the ravine, Bobo and Ranae had some bad luck. They found that humans were in the immediate area, thus increasing the likelihood of us hearing human noises instead of bigfoots if we continued.  At that point, we quickly left the area.

Luckily, Tyler Bounds had been out bigfooting with some local Minnesota bigfooters the night before and had heard knocks. We moved the production team to this new location and started the night over again. Over the next several hours we heard several things moving around in the forest, but I do not know what they were. They could have just as easily been deer or racoons as bigfoots. Unfortunately, we never got a visual on whatever it was.

Minnesota definitely has sasquatches living there. I think we were just a bit too early in the year for this spot. The hazelnuts that are in abundance when many sightings occur had not yet fruited. (There was a sighting only a couple weeks before, but perhaps this was a bigfoot scouting to see if the fruits were available…)  We certainly had our fair share of interesting witnesses to speak to! And to me, the fact that the same bigfoot (“Peek-a-Lou”) has been seen so many times in that area is very interesting.  Looking at the sightings of Peek-a-Lou might shed a little light on the habits, range, and needs of sasquatches in that area.

Bigfoot sighting in Minnesota with Video

Author: CryPtoReporter  |  Category: Sightings  |  Comments (0)  |  Add Comment

Latest Bigfoot sighting out of Minnesota. A  farmer and his wife were walking in the woods north of Stillwater one July night, when they saw a strange animal, according to a new YouTube video. The couple thought they’d come upon a deer, but heard a “low odd sounding grunt,” and decided to get closer and see what it was.

“Doesn’t look like a deer to me,” the farmer explains in the set-up to the video.

The tape is described as taken “near the St. Croix river.” In the video clip the man captured , a large red-haired figure is seen passing through the woods for a single fleeting moment. It is an interesting Bigfoot sighting and in the video below it is broken down and zoomed in for better looks at the mysterious creature. Take a look at this Minnesota Bigfoot sighting and decide for yourself if its possibly a Sasquatch.

New Bigfoot Image Cut Down by Occam’s Razor

A photograph captured on a trail camera in the Minnesota woods has some people suggesting that Bigfoot has once again been filmed. In October, brothers Casey and Peter Kedrowski rigged a motion-activated camera to record wildlife near Chippewa National Forest. When the pair recently looked at the images, one showed a dark, featureless human-like figure that made them wonder if they had accidentally photographed the mysterious Bigfoot creature.

The figure looked a lot like a bow hunter might appear, though none of the local hunters the brothers spoke to admitted to being in the area on the night in question. Soon a pair of local Bigfoot enthusiasts arrived on the scene, and “authenticated” the mystery. Bigfoot buff Don Sherman analyzed the photo, comparing it to the most famous image of an alleged Bigfoot, seen in a 1967 film. According to Sherman, the proportions of the figure that the Kedrowskis captured are very similar to the figure in the 1967 Bigfoot film. “I am pretty convinced,” Sherman said.

Sherman may be convinced, but others aren’t—and this Bigfoot story doesn’t survive one of the most important scientific principles, Occam’s Razor. This idea (attributed to a William of Occam, who devised his version in the 1300s) is that if you have a phenomenon to be explained and several different theories are proposed as solutions, the simplest one (or the one with the fewest assumptions) is likely to be the correct answer.

For example, if a camera snaps a photo in the woods of a bipedal form on a trail that closely resembles a human in size and shape, is it more likely that the figure is actually a person, or that it’s Bigfoot—an animal that never proven to exist? Both are possible, but which is more likely?

The arms and legs of the figure in the trailcam image do not show the curvature of arm or leg muscles, a synthetic jacket seems to reflects a sheen, and the figure seems to be wearing gloves. It might indeed be Bigfoot—if Bigfoot has taken to wearing warm winter clothes as it hikes the trails.

Ironically, if Sherman is correct, his comparison actually undermines the whole case for Bigfoot, since the image is almost certainly a person in a dark jacket (whether hunter or hoax). That is, this Bigfoot expert is saying that a photo of a person in a dark woodsman’s outfit looks a lot like a famous Bigfoot photo that many suspect is really a guy in a dark ape outfit. If the new (bogus) Bigfoot image closely resembles an old one, then logically the old image is suspect.

Many monster-hunters have distanced themselves from the recent photo. Loren Coleman, founder of the International Cryptozoology Museum in Portland, Maine, said that he thought the Bigfoot looked “bogus” and may have been a prank. “All I can say is that this merely continues the media’s need to push weak Bigfoot stories on an unsuspecting public. This image seems to have no solid foundation of evidence,” Coleman said.

This case also highlights one of the pitfalls of researching mysterious subjects like Bigfoot, ghosts, and UFOs: anyone can declare himself or herself an expert on the topic. There are no governing bodies or accrediting institutions for investigators, and most casual readers can’t tell which investigators use credible scientific methods and which simply put up a Web site and deem themselves authorities. The Minnesota trailcam non-Bigfoot photo says nothing about whether Bigfoot exists, but it does reveal a great deal about how these stories begin and spread.

Minnesota Trailcam catches Bigfoot ?

minnesota bigfoot

Tim Kedrowski and his sons, Peter and Casey, are not pushovers for Bigfoot stories, but a frame on a game trail camera set up on their hunting land north of Remer has left them in a quandary.

“To us, it’s very hard because we lean toward the skeptical type,” Kedrowski said in a telephone interview from his Rice, Minn., home.

But after checking with neighbors and any other hunters who might have been walking through the dense woods at 7:20 p.m. on the rainy night of Oct. 24, he said they couldn’t imagine what else the image could be. Tim said he considered ideas from a bear to a bow hunter in a fuzzy suit. But the arm and hand couldn’t be a bear’s, or its upright gait. And there is no evidence in the photo of a bow or flashlight a hunter might be using to track a wounded deer.

The Kedrowskis checked the Minnesota Bigfoot Web site and came up with the names of Don Sherman and Bob Olson, the Northern Minnesota Bigfoot Research Team.

Sherman is the facilities manager for the Cass Lake Indian Health Service Hospital, and Olson is an auto body repairman in Deer River.

Sherman has responded to numerous area Bigfoot sighting reports and has made casts of footprints. He said he once caught footage of a Bigfoot on a thermal imaging camera and heard its warbling call.

When Sherman saw the image the Kedrowskis sent him, Tim said the researcher responded that he believes it is a picture of a Bigfoot. Sherman went with the Kedrowskis to the photo site and measured the height of the creature in comparison the sapling next to it. He determined the animal is about 7 feet tall.

“I’ve hunted there for 43 years,” Tim said of their property near Shingle Mill Lake. “I’ve seen one bear off my deer stand. I’ve seen three timber wolves.”

Casey Kedrowski said he and his brother had gone out to the family’s hunting shack prior to deer season to bring in firewood and make other preparations. They set up a game trail camera to see what might be wandering around their property.

Casey said he and his brother were the only people who knew where the camera was located. They took the camera down when deer season started, and a couple of weeks later checked on what they had caught.

When they came to the picture of the long-armed creature walking upright, Casey said, “We just looked at each other. Each of us thought we were playing a trick on each other.”

When they determined that neither of them had pulled a prank on the other, they checked to see if anyone had been in the area that night. Tim said the only neighbors were two elderly hunters in their own shack, neither of whom matched the size and appearance of the creature caught on camera.

However, he said, when he asked the men about the night the camera clicked on the mystery, they said they had gone out about 2 a.m. to use the outhouse and had heard strange squealing noises. Ted said he asked them to show him the direction of the sounds. They pointed to the area where the camera had been, although they had no idea of its location.

Sharing photo

Ted said he just released the photo and permission for its publication last weekend.

“It was deer season and we wanted to concentrate on deer hunting, and (we) really wanted to talk to people in the area and … make sure they weren’t scamming us,” he said. “We’re not 100 percent sure, obviously. After visiting with (Sherman and Olson) we feel they’ve done a lot more investigation. That’s why we put it in their hands.”

Sherman said the Northern Minnesota Bigfoot Research Team started receiving reports of Bigfoot sightings in 2006 and has had reports every year since, including four reports this year. He said the first reported sighting he investigated was from a man running a road grader near Six Mile Lake south of Lake Winnibigoshish. Sherman said he was able to make casts of the footprints. A more recent sighting report was by a truck driver.

“I’ve talked to this guy – this was last year – he was coming from Crosby (Minn.) with a load of lumber by Washburn Lake,” Sherman said. “It had hands, he said, like baseball mitts. It took three steps to cross the road. He was pretty shook up.”

Doubt expressed

In spite of such seemingly credible reports, biologists remain unconvinced.

“Personally, I don’t buy the fact this thing exists,” said Blane Klemek, assistant wildlife manager with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources in Bemidji.

“There are certainly species that are discovered each year –but megafauna – rare is it a big mammal is discovered,” he said.

He noted the belief that the ivory-billed woodpecker is not extinct after all is based on a fleeting, indistinct video image of some kind of woodpecker recorded in 2004 in the Big Woods of Arkansas. No other sightings have been reported.

He also noted than no one has ever found a Bigfoot carcass.

“All organisms die; they don’t just go away,” Klemek said. “You’d think someone someday would find one.”

Evan Hazard, Bemidji State University retired mammalogist, also expressed doubt about the Bigfoot’s existence.

“I just don’t know,” he said. “My background in mammalogy makes me skeptical, not expert. My inclination is to say we really don’t have good evidence.”

Hazard said proof would be a clear photo matched with footprints at the same site – multiple pieces of overlapping evidence.

Search continues

Sherman said the research would go on. He said he believes the Bigfoot is intelligent and perfectly at home in the woods.

“That’s why they’re so elusive,” he said. “They know the woods better than any hunter because they live it.”

One thing the hunters agree on is that even if they could produce a carcass for examination, they wouldn’t shoot a Bigfoot.

“Absolutely not – no way,” said Tim. “I asked my sons would they shoot it, and they said no. It has every right to live.”

“I’ve talked to people who’ve had them in their sights and their scopes, and they said they couldn’t pull the trigger,” she Sherman.

“We’ve got all kinds of equipment, night vision, cameras, listening devices,” Sherman said.
